My Explanation of Being a Gnostic
What does it mean to be a Christian Gnostic?
This is a question that most people often ask, but before discovering the meaning of being a Christian Gnostic, or just a Gnostic for that reason, they often hear a whole slue of polemics and misrepresentation on the Gnostic’s. Some of these polemics and misrepresentations are half truths, some are hasty generalizations, while others are just straight up lies! The Gnostic’s are misunderstood, so the only way to find out the answers regarding just what it means to be a Gnostic, you need to genuinely become one in order to find out or ask someone who is a Gnostic to give you some sort of explanation.
“To Gnostic’s, true religion, elite spirituality, is a realization of the divinity of every person, an experience of ascent to the divine homeland.” – The Secret Book of John: Annotated and Explained by Stevan Davies
As people around the world become more rational and religion loosing its grip on the world, a new world is coming a world of spirituality and not secondhand religious dogma and doctrine. As we begin to find greater difficulty in externalizing God, the spirit has shown us that God is none other than within us. We are God and that we as individuals are the immanent aspects to God. To Gnostic’s, this is none other than the will of God, that we should discover the latent divinity within ourselves.
“I term the Immortal One a plasmate, because it is a form of energy; it is living information. It replicates itself—not through information or in information—but as information.
The plasmate can crossbond with a human, creating what I call a homoplasmate. This annexes the mortal human permanently to the plasmate. We know this as the “birth from above” or “birth from the Spirit.” It was initiated by Christ, but the Empire destroyed all the homoplasmates before they could replicate.
In dormant seed form, the plasmate slumbered in the buried library of codices at Chenoboskion until 1945 C.E. This is what Jesus meant when he spoke elliptically of the “mustard seed” which, he said, “would grow into a tree large enough for birds to roost in.” He foresaw not only his own death but that of all homoplasmates. He foresaw the codices unearthed, read, and the plasmate seeking out new human hosts to crossbond with; but he foresaw the absence of the plasmate for almost two thousand years.” – Phillip K. Dick: Tractates Cryptica Scriptura – Valis
A Gnostic’s job is not to convert and proselytize but, rather to focus on themselves using prayer, meditation, and introspection. Christian Gnosticism is essentially the Buddhist form of Christianity. We do not focus on submission and “obedience” but rather on curiosity and creativity. The Gnostic’s are an inclusive bunch of people despite accusations of being “elitist” its been well recorded by even Gnostic enemies that we are inclusive opening our doors to even “pagans.” If anyone comes to Gnosticism it was assumed (and to a degree still should be assumed) that the spirit had led them to them whether it is was a curiosity or followed through with their life only to end up at the doors of The Gnostic Churches.
“The soul who has tasted these things has come to realize that sweet passions are fleeting. She has learned about evil, has foresaken these passions, and has adapted a new lifestyle.” – Authoritative Discourse
Gnostics do not seek to belittle people, let us not forget, we as Gnostic’s believe that we have been led here by The God above God’s. This God is timeless and is undefined, in order for this to happen to know the truth one needs to humble one’s self greatly to these truths, so how can a Gnostic boast and believe they are “above” people if they had been humbled greatly? The Gnostics believe their are three pre-dominate states in human beings. We are all three at the same time but the one is pre-dominate in us, these states are:
The Hylic, this is the type of thought in which one percieves the physical reality as being the only thing that exist. The Hylic where given titles such as “Pagan” in the Nag Hammadi Texts to derive the fact that they worshipped statues and monuments, which are mere physical objects these objects are mere shells. Hylic thinking was referred to also as “the flesh” and “carnal” in order to denote the lower nature and desires of humans.
The Psychic, this is the type of thought in which one perceives the physical reality as only one aspect of reality however, they believe physicality and the spirit directly come from the same source. This is not true however to the Gnostic belief as physicality came indirectly from The Father but was made directly by the demiurge as mere image of The Fullness. The Fullness is where the home of the spirit lies and it is here where The Father’s home is. The psychics where referred to as “Jews” this is because, it was believed the Jews did not fully know The real Father but where under the influence of the demiurge, psychics can go either way, they can progress spiritually or revert back to the hylic mindset. Psychic was meant to also mean the soul, or “Psyche” like in psychology which mean our thoughts or feelings, in other words, psychics woshipped their little ideas and were under the control of their own thoughts and feelings.
The final part was the Pneumatic, those who are spiritual and are truly free, no longer under the influence of Demiurge control. Very few people become fully spiritual and transparent to the world, we know them was the great wisdom teachers of the world. Those who are Pneumatic have re-discovered themselves by way of Gnosis. Those who are Pneumatic are the real Christians, so have you guessed yet? It is possible to be a Christian without being a Christian, don’t we see a lot of that in the world? People calling themselves “Christians” meanwhile ignoring Jesus message, if they do follow the message it will only be because, they are forced to believing that The God of the Old Testament is Father of Christ, when he is not.
“Speak concerning the truth to those who seek it and of knowledge to those who, in their error, have committed sin. Make sure-footed those who stumble and stretch forth your hands to the sick. Nourish the hungry and set at ease those who are troubled. Foster men who love. Raise up and awaken those who sleep. For you are this understanding which encourages. If the strong follow this course, they are even stronger. Turn your attention to yourselves. Do not be concerned with other things, namely, that which you have cast forth from yourselves, that which you have dismissed.” – The Gospel of Truth
The Gnostic’s job is not to be worried about worldly things for these issues and conflicts are but mere distractions to the end that is re-uniting with God. We are not to be hard on ourselves or others for “this ignorance of the Father brought about terror and fear. And terror became dense like a fog, that no one was able to see. Because of this, error became strong… For they were as nothing, this terror and this forgetfulness and this figure of falsehood, whereas this established truth is unchanging, unperturbed and completely beautiful. For this reason, do not take error too seriously. Thus, since it had no root, it was in a fog as regards the Father, engaged in preparing works and forgetfulnesses and fears in order, by these means, to beguile those of the middle and to make them captive.” In fact it is encouraged to help others who have “missed the mark” and be their for those who weak and in need. We are to help those searching for the truth, without actively evangelizing anyone. The remnants of your old life are not to be attacked but to move on from the ignorance from which you came. Ignorance will be blown away like the fog where terror had become dense in.
“Sometimes Christian apologists say there are only three options to who Jesus was: a liar, a lunatic or the Lord. But there could be a fourth option — legend.“
When it comes to Christ, we do not limit Christ to a person stuck in time and space. He is called “living” and “risen” for a reason, he is within us, he is us. Christ said he will be with us forever even until the end of the age. To the gnostic it is possible to be the spiritual twin of Christ, this idea is equivalent to the Buddhist idea of reaching Buddha-hood instead we call it Christhood, in which we become the spiritual twins of Christ. Pneumatic Christians or True Christians know this when “we know that our old self was crucified with him so that the body of sin might be done away with, that we should no longer be slaves to sin — because anyone who has died has been freed from sin. Now if we died with Christ, we believe that we will also live with him. For we know that since Christ was raised from the dead, he cannot die again; death no longer has mastery over him. The death he died, he died to sin once for all; but the life he lives, he lives to God.” Likewise, to the Gnostic we will live for God and because of The Father, who is beyond even the name God.
“Jesus said, “If they say to you, ‘Where have you come from?’ say to them, ‘We have come from the light, from the place where the light came into being by itself, established [itself], and appeared in their image.’
If they say to you, ‘Is it you?’ say, ‘We are its children, and we are the chosen of the living Father.’
If they ask you, ‘What is the evidence of your Father in you?’ say to them, ‘It is motion and rest.’” – Saying 50 The Gospel of Thomas
